Which Coating Should I
use ?
|
|
|
| This is
a frequently asked question and the answer depends on the
interaction of the geometry and tool material with the work-piece
and the specific operating conditions. |
| Our
first recommendation is that each new application should be
evaluated using the combined knowledge of the tool user and coating
centre specialist to choose the best coating. The accompanying chart
provides some general guidelines for the selection of the correct
coating for certain applications. |
| It is
important to understand that more than one coating may show improved
results over an uncoated tool. For example, TiN has proven to be an
excellent choice for improving the productivity in milling of low
and high alloy steels. However, recent results by customers indicate
a potential for even higher productivity with TiCN making it the
preferred coating in this application. |

| Titanium
Nitride was the first PVD wear resistant firl coating
introduced at Surface Technology coatings. It is an excellent
general purpose coating for protecting a wide variety of tools
and parts from wear. |
| TiN
is an ideal choice for the machining of iron based materials,
die casting and palstic mould tooling. TiN is also an
excellent coating or wear part applications demanding
resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. |

Carbonitride - TiCNite (TiCN) |
| TiCNite
coated tools have a very high surface hardness, over 3000
Vickers (approximately 90 Rc). TiCN is harder and
tougher than other coating materials, consequently it has high
resistance to edge chipping and is a good choice in milling
applications. |
| Sutton
TiCNite coated cutting tools with a cobalt grade of
high speed steel can perform at speeds and feed up to 40%
above conventional uncoated cutter and in some aplications,
speeds and feeds similar to carbide tools can be achieved.
This is why TiCNite has been selected as a standard
coating. |
